Deerhaven 2015 Seventh Night Dhamma Talk

During this talk, Peter explains the “fulfilling of the seven factors of awakening”, as described by the Anapanasati Sutta, quoting the translation by Gil Fronsdal.  During the explanations, Peter used a graphic illustration of what are called the “panca bala”, the five powers, to describe the dynamic balancing of energy-tranquility, combined with the balancing of concentration-investigation.  This process is ongoing due to the reality of impermanence, and the resulting dynamic equilibrium is equanimity.

Awakening With Tranquility

This dhamma dialogue continues the exploration of the seven factors of awakening, focused on passadhi, tranquility.  During the discussion, Peter explained the different categories where tranquility is placed in addition to a factor for awakening.  It’s function of balancing the awakening factor of energy was emphasized, focused on the peaceful quality of the “flow” of energy through different self-states.

Here are the notes prepared for this discussion:  AWAKENING WITH TRANQUILITY

Next week’s discussion will explore the awakening factor of concentration.

From Demons to Angels

As a response to requests from various sangha members, I’ve written an article that includes the graphic regarding the “five powers” and how we can progress our practice beyond the influence of the five hindrances and towards the fostering of the seven factors of awakening.

Resolving Skeptical Doubt

During this talk, the hindrance of skeptical doubt was discussed, using the Buddhist concept of panca bala, the five powers or five faculties to describe the dynamic balancing of energy/tranquility and faith/discernment through ongoing mindfulness practice.  This was followed by dialogue to make the abstract principles more concretely understood.  Next week’s topic will be exploring the transition from overcoming the hindrances to cultivating wisdom.
