This talk reviews those qualities of awareness that are the highest development of consciousness attained through mindfulness meditation. They represent the harmonious integration of mind conditioning functions with the flow of conscious awareness. Each of the 12 cetasikas are reviewed with the intention to foster meditative awareness of these states of mind as they are occurring–this pairing produces a remarkable level of mental stability, lucidity and flexibility, for directly observing how the mind liberated from craving and clinging operates. There is a recording entitled “Guided Contemplation of the Six Beautiful Pairs of Cetasikas” posted in the website archives, which is intended to integrate the concepts of this talk into meditative awareness.

This talk provides a review of those mind conditioners, also called cetasikas, that cooperate to shape each moment of self experience that is not afflicted by dukkha–distress and confusion. The talk also provides a description of how these wholesome factors integrate with the Universal Mind Conditioners and the Particular Mind Conditioners to provide a well-integrated personality and provide a basis for further developing the mind towards full Awakening. The archives of this site also provide a recording: “Guided Universal Wholesome Mind Conditioners Meditation”.

This talk continues a review of the 52 cetasikas, those functions that condition how self-organization is formed, with emphasis on the 14 unwholesome mind conditioners. Each is reviewed and their interactions with other ethically malleable mind conditioning functions is described. The intention is to be able to understand the mind conditioners conceptually and then be able to be immediately aware of their operation through the cultivation of mindful investigation. The goal of this practice is to “deconstruct” the misconception that there is an enduring and autonomous self. To further this insight, this talk is complemented by a recording of the same evening, found in the archive of this site entitled “Contemplating The Unwholesome Mind Conditioners”

Next week’s talk will review the 7 Universal Wholesome Cetasikas, which function in every moment of experience that is unaffected by dukkha.
