Self State Transcendence

During this talk, Peter reviewed the Four Noble Truths, emphasizing the ultimate development of the Noble Eightfold Path, Right Knowledge and Right Release, the transformation of Right Understanding and Right Intention from concept to direct realization.  This practice moves from “self state conflict” (the five hindrances) through “self state integration” toward awakening as the seven awakening factors mature through mindfulness practices.   He emphasized that awakening is a process, not an identifiable “state” of being.  He quoted extensively from an article posted by Gil Fronsdal on the “Tenfold Path” to illustrate the process.

Here are the notes from the evening’s discussion:  SELF STATE TRANSCENDENCE

Next week’s discussion will focus on the process of awakening, reviewing various traditional descriptions of awakening, with an emphasis on what are called “the progressions of insight”.

Franciscan Center Retreat Report

As is our custom, after a significant retreat event, there’s a dialogue about the retreat experience amongst the participants.  Since much of what occurs is deeper than conscious awareness, having the opportunity to talk about the experience among other knowledgeable meditation students can consolidate the learning and make it more accessible in daily life routines.  The group discussion this evening was among experienced practitioners, so the dialogue was at a more advanced level.  Next week’s dialogue will begin to explore the next stanzas of the Satipatthana Sutta, mindfulness of mental objects, involving the Buddhist concept of self-structure, the Five Aggregates of Clinging.  This series of explorations will include a core principle of Buddhist psychology, paticca sammupada, usually translated as dependent origination.

Resolving Skeptical Doubt

During this talk, the hindrance of skeptical doubt was discussed, using the Buddhist concept of panca bala, the five powers or five faculties to describe the dynamic balancing of energy/tranquility and faith/discernment through ongoing mindfulness practice.  This was followed by dialogue to make the abstract principles more concretely understood.  Next week’s topic will be exploring the transition from overcoming the hindrances to cultivating wisdom.

Using Body Awareness Skillfully

During this dialogue, Kitty followed up on Judy’s previous talk about mindfulness of the body.  After reviewing the talk, she invited the sangha to share their experiences of using body awareness to interrupt the internal self-talk that seems to define our existence.

Third Night: How The Self Is Formed, Deformed And Reformed

During this rather extensive Dhamma talk, Peter reviewed the concept of paticca sammupada, usually translated as dependent origination.  He explained why he prefers to name the process “contingent provisional emergence”.  This concept is key to the Buddhist understanding of karma, the law of cause and effect.  The formation of a momentary self-state, it’s fulfillment as a moment of “selfing” in awareness, then the dissolution of that composite of conditioning factors was described in depth.  Emphasis was placed on how important mindfulness of sense inputs is for the practice, and the critical emphasis placed on understanding the emerging self-state as provisional and the value of dispensing with unwholesome states as soon as possible.  This furthers the process of personality integration,  which is followed by nurturing wholesome states to fruition.  The concepts of craving and clinging were described, with tanha, unquenchable thirst for craving and upadana, fuel or nutriment, for clinging.  Peter described the “glue” of craving and clinging as raga, passion, heat or fire.  The antidote for raga is viraga, dispassion, or the absence of fueling the fire.  This was followed by a lively discussion of this process and it’s implications for alleviating distress.
