Guided Exclusive Mindfulness of Breathing Meditation

This guided meditation provides training in the cultivation of highly persistent and detailed mindfulness of breathing meditation as recommended by the teachings of the Pa Auk Sayadaw, who is an acknowledged master of jhana practice.  The goal of this practice is to cultivate unitary focused attention on the sensations noticed in the area around the rim of the nostrils in preparation for extraordinary states of mind called jhanas.  This presentation is intended to accompany the Dharma talk of the same evening, March 10, 2021, entitled “Reviewing Exclusive Mindfulness of Breathing Meditation”, and which also reviews the characteristics of the Theravadan cultivation of the Four Jhanas.

Reviewing the Functions Regarding Mindfulness of Breathing Meditation

This talk provides a review of how the practice of mindfulness with breathing meditation changes the structure of those areas of the brain that beneficially affect consciousness for better mental health and to promote the process of Awakening.  There is an accompanying “Guided Mindfulness With Breathing Meditation”, recorded prior to this meeting and posted in the Audio archives.

Here are the notes prepared for this talk:  Breathing With Mindfulness

The focus of next week’s talk will provide a review of the 16 stages found in the Anapanasati Sutta, the Mindfulness With Breathing Discourse.  The stages provide experiential “markers” that can help meditation practitioners confirm their progress during the process of Awakening.

Mindfulness Of Breathing Guided Meditation with Question and Answer Dialogues

During this meeting, Peter provided a guided meditation regarding breath awareness that tracks the progression of focus on the sensations of breathing from the simple awareness “this is the in-breath…this is the out-breath” to cultivate continuity of breath awareness, then “looking closer” to note carefully the textural quality of each breath cycle to increase interest and investigation in awareness.  Finally, the meditation students are invited to hone in on one specific touch sensation exclusively in order to cultivate the quality of awareness preparatory to practicing jhana, or alternatively, to maximize the practice of vipassana.  A separate file is associated with this notation that reflects the question and answer period following the guided meditation, during which particular points of meditation practice were explored.
